Take me home....

We all find adopting a new pet a fun, interesting but emotional time, whether we visit a neighbour's puppy litter or go to a dog pound or rescue, the look in animal's eyes is just saying to you, 'Take meee home!'.

I would advise you, if you're looking for love, to follow The 5 Golden Rules on Puppy Buying:

1. First Things First: Firstly think about your circumstances, ask yourself, does everyone in the family want a new pet? Do you have the right facilities to raise a dog? Will the dog get bigger and do you know what breed suits you? Can you provide it with food, water, exercise, fun, medical treatment and/or toys? If your thinking about an older/younger dog/puppy then research or ask breeders/shelters/vets/neighbours who have dogs about what things you need to do before/when/after buying or adopting. You can also go to Dog Shows if you know a specific breed you are interested in, ask breeders or groups etc who specialize in this particular breed, but make sure you do your homework!

2. Where to go?: Once you know what type of dog/breed you are looking for, find a responsible Breeder OR as we more advise, a Rescue Shelter or Pound. Go to a Rescue Place first please because unlike litters of bred dogs, these dogs can be in denial, they may be destroyed..... its painful to think of it but please go to a Shelter and look there, there's many dogs/pups looking for homes who desperately need them!!

3. The Right Pet? The Right Place?: Make sure when you think you've found the perfect pup/doggy that the Breeder/Rescue Center is a responsible one, so make sure (important if you're buying from a breeder) you ask questions such as, 'How long have you been breeding? Can I see the parents? Are there any medical problems that may be genetic or associated with this breed etc? Have there been any behavioural problems since birth? Questions like these can only take up less than an hour of your time, but help you and a dog for a lifetime, then you can be sure that your new pet is healthy, balanced and comes from a good background. Of course, all the puppies/dogs are cute and adorable! - But you need to make sure you choose the right one to suit your lifestyle! And make sure your not buying from a dodgy source. Some pet shops may contain puppies from Puppy Farms or Mills, to find out more about these inhumane set-ups then just visit http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/feb/03/puppy-farms-battery-dogs and read the article, you can also contact Puppy Farm Rescue Groups/Charities such as http://www.puppywatch.org.uk/ and http://www.dogs-r-us.org/, well-known Dog Charity The Dog's Trust also offer advice and information on Puppy Farming, here's a link to the page http://www.dogstrust.org.uk/az/p/puppyfarming/default.aspx you can also speak to your Local Vet. Please be aware about the practice of Puppy Farming/Mills, its immorality, its inhumanity and also its dangers.

4. Found the perfect match? Paperwork done - whats next?: Decide a pick-up date on when to finally bring home your lovely new addition to the household! Remember that some Rescue Shelters may want to plan a home visit. But after some weeks or so, you can finally bring home Fido! Make sure you start balancing and helping him to settle in right away, start to bring in the rules and barriers of the household softly and slowly and don't force your new friend, it may take some time for him to get used to you and the new routine. Remember he may have been in kennels for weeks and may seem a bit shy and reserved at first. Help him to learn where everything is, his food, his water bowl, where he will be sleeping, where to (not) go/what to (not) do and where he can pee and poop. If you have a puppy make sure you do not scold him all the time for doing his business in the wrong place, it is a whole new concept for him!

5.  Most importantly - Enjoy!:  Enjoy your time you have with your new buddie, show him to your friends and family. Get him used to other pets and introduce him to new things in the area but be careful and cautious. You don't want him to get too overexcited around new animals/people/kids. Start early with socialization with other people and animals. Let him experience new things and sights and sounds. You don't want him to get mentally scarred though by a bad experience so take it easy! But remember with puppies you need to get them jabbed before they can go outside or see other dogs/animals around the neighbourhood. If you are confused about your pup's welfare/health/behaviour then simply contact your Vet etc, or visit a few websites, here's a few which may help you, http://www.cesarsway.com/channel/dog-care/new-dog http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/raising-puppy http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/388 http://www.hillspet.co.uk/dog/puppy.aspx http://www.dog-names.org.uk/canine-health.htm http://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-health-advice/puppies-and-dogs/ http://www.dogstrust.org.uk/az/p/puppies/default.aspx http://www.bluecross.org.uk/1741-2773/caring-for-your-puppy.html . Now that's alot of information! Make sure you fully know what to do! But don't fret, help is at hand from the professionals! They have the experience and knowledge to help you!

Now that you know The 5 Golden Rules on Puppy Buying you can start your adventure on finding a new family member or buddy! Dogs are GREAT GREAT GREAT companions and animals can heal and help us in ways which we cannot understand. Animals have amazing powers...

Now enjoy buying, looking, searching, researching, visiting, seeing, meeting, greeting, bringing home, loving and spending time with your new companion! Just Remember... Do your research and you'll be glad you did! There may be ups and downs in puppy raising and growing up with your doggy friend(s) but you'll love every minute and new experience that it brings! And all of it is worth it! Trust me, I've experienced it and loved every minute of it! I'm sure you've seen or read Marley & Me! Enjoy your new doggy!

"Dogs are not our whole life. But they make our lives whole."
Roger Caras

Fun Things To Do:

Think of a random dog breed, it could be a Labrador Retriever, a Pug or even a Mexican Hairless Dog! But try to research 5 facts about the breed.

Draw a puppy dog, name it and colour him in! http://www.how-to-draw-funny-cartoons.com/cartoon-puppies.html This link to a website can help you through the steps! Have fun!

Make a list of rules for your dog/puppy, don't be harsh but fair and correct, you could pin them up for all the family to see and follow!

Buy a couple of puppy books etc and read all about puppies and then make a presentation for a local group or for some friends or family, you could also do it for your vets!

Hope you have fun!

Summer may be over but lets still have fun!

Okay, its nearing the end of Summer now, pupils return back to school, routines change and soon the clocks go back.

Some Summers may have been busy, boring, lazy, relaxing, exciting, unforgetable, different, enjoyable and many others but we hope that everyone enjoyed their summers, and also, enjoyed it with their pets!

Whether its with your furry friendy hamster, cuddly cat, squawking chickens or your doggy-friend, we hope you made the most of their company and enjoyed every second of their presence!

Sometimes we may take things for granted, but we should remember to enjoy the time that we share with our pets, because its sacred. Take every opportunity we are offered as we need to make the most of everyday we have with our families, friends and best friends! Love every minute with your animals!

Do dogs feel nervous? Happy? Feel what you feel?

Have you ever wondered why your dog changes their posture, facial expressions, emotions and mood sometimes..? Then why not look at your own mood? Are you really stressed out at the minute? Or 'over the moon'? Theres one thing for sure...

Our dogs mirror our actions!

So, whenever your displaying signs of happiness, so will your dog! But if your nervous, anxious or stressed out, if you observe your dog's behaviour, you'll find that hey are acting differently too!

With A-Level and GCSE results coming through this month/Summer Holidays, there are going to be many anxious teenagers etc, and after a long wait and a lot of effort, also some very happy ones too!

(To teens or people awaiting exam results) - You may notice that your dog is acting very anxious and 'under-the-weather' too, thats because you are waiting nervously for your results! You see,

YOU NERVOUS = YOUR DOG NERVOUS

and,

YOUR ACTIONS = YOUR DOG'S ACTIONS

It's that simple, our dogs 'mirror' our actions and feelings!

Our Charities and Rescues

There are so many animal, human and nature charities and rescue in the USA, UK and in the world! This post is dedicated to the hundreds, thousands, millions and even billions of rescue teams, volunteers, cleaners and managers who give up their time to help the less fortunate, injured or weak humans or animals.

There are many people who do work anonymously for shelters and we need to thank them for their dedication to the running/work of the rescue or charity. We would like to thank everyone who works to help others. Whether its managing a charity's finances, or even cleaning utensils ready for animal surgery, everyone plays their part and helps in every way possible. Volunteers work long hours and dedicate their lives to animals. Carers for fosterers have to dedicate themselves to the animals they work with, day-in-day-out.

Dog of the Week

This blog section features a new dog of the week every week, dogs that are in the news, dogs that are well-known hero's or even just dogs that i have met or know.

This week, let me introduce you to our first DOG OF THE WEEK, Lucky!

LUCKY

Lucky is a handsome, hilarious and hot, male, German Shepherd Dog cross! He was fostered for and then adopted by my auntie from the Westside German Shepherd Rescue of Los Angeles. He was in quite poor condition and had a couple of injuries and mange. My auntie helped along with the rescue to get him back to tip-top condition and now he is the most handsome male!

He now lives with his girlfriend, Bug, the female Samoyed and has grown to be one of the biggest dogs i have ever seen! Lucky deserves a spot here because of all he's been through and also how sweet, friendly, funny and good-natured he is. He love toys but not cats!   He is a total ladies man and continues to make us laugh when he plays with Bug or his toys.

Miya and Lucky surely do love each other! They loved seeing each other and going to the beach together! Lucky, Bug and Miya do certainly attract a lot of attention! Lucky is above on the right and Bug is left! Lucky is so docile but he can't be without my auntie, he hates not being with her, they are so attached to each other, they're the perfect match, and for Bug, the perfect doggy-match!

Above is Miya and Lucky, on the beach, first time together! (They are such flirts), anyway, so Lucky is such a softie and a lovely dog and he gets on well with almost everyone! He is one of those big dogs who is very soft and gentle and who gets beaten up by dogs that are smaller than him! He really, truly is a brill dog and he is also a good guard dog, he has an ear-piercing bark!!

Lucky is getting very big now! I hope to see him lots more as he is so fun to be with! 'LuckyBear' is a funny lad and he continues to make us laugh and smile! We love you Lucky! This is why he is the Dog of the Week for this week!! Thanks for reading about this weeks DOG OF THE WEEK! To see who is the Dog of next week then come back and check to see more!

Some of my favourite dog breeds:

Here are some of my favourite dog breeds, i love all dogs and all breeds but some i just love love love!

The Pitbull Terrier, a very strong, loyal and independent dog which i love! Although they may have a bad reputation from the media etc, they are lovely dogs, if raised properly and trained at an early age as most dogs. I love their look and their stunning eyes which shine with beauty and dignity, they're  great!

The German Shepherd also has a lovely coat! They look beautiful and they are beautiful! They ave such a good nature and i love them because my auntie has a GSD cross-breed! I love them with the usual black and tan but also solid black and solid white are my fav's too!

Huskies! I am in love with Huskies! They are beautiful dogs! I just want to touch and stroke and ruffle through their lovely, thick coats which are coloured so uniquely! They are also strong dogs, they are woking dogs and they have a thick coat because they work in the cold, snow and ice of the North!

Flat Coated Retrievers are brilliant dogs! They are intelligent and popular and because my dog Miya is (well, we think) part Flat Coat it has made our love of them grow, we didn't know the breed until a couple of years ago or so! They have a very nice coat and are earger to please and learn!

The Border Collie, is a very intelligent doggy, one of the smartest in the world in fact! Miya is part Border Collie! They are very excitable and entertainable! They don't ever seem to stop! But they are cool dogs and very fun to have as pets, however you may want to keep them stimulated and exercised as they thrive off of it! The cute pup to the right is a tricolour border collie!

Thanks for reading all about some of my favourite dog breeds and why i think their great, but, truth is ALL DOGS ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

Please read up before buying or adopting a dog or puppy, think about how about your lifestyle and how you could take it for walks, groom it and give it the right food, water and vet checkups! You'll be glad you did!

DOG BREED OF THE WEEK

The Fancy Flat Coated Retriever

The Flat Coated Retriever or 'Flat Coat' is a majestic, beautiful and strong dog breed, which makes it this weeks DOG BREED OF THE WEEK!

HISTORY:

The Flat Coat originated in the mid 19th Century, when shooting was at its most popular - it gained popularity as a gamekeeper's dog. The breed originated in the UK from imported Newfoundland Wavy-Coated Retriever dogs or the now extinct St John's Water Dog, these were then crossed with Setters. It is thought that Canadian seafarers brought Newfoundlands  to British ports which helped to contribute to the ancestry of the Flat Coat. Also that Collie-breeds were added to increase trainability and also along with the Newfoundland, the Setter too. Originally bred as a working hunter retriever to fetch shot birds form the water it works well in and out of water.

FLAT COATS AS PETS:

Flat Coats make great pets! This is due to their great nature, they are intelligent, obedient, easy to train, very attentive, lovable, highly affectionate, multi-talented, enthusisatic, gentle and hard-working. but if you have one you must know that you need to keep them exercised as they are a working breed! They love an active life and need to have lots of catching, carry and fetching objects as they love to play! They thrive off exercise and attention. They are eager to please and they await their master's commands eagerly. You can never be sad with a Flat-Coat around!- they are very cheerful dogs and are loyal and happy optimists! Which makes them such lovable and endearing companions. But if you leave them alone they will become despondent and unhappy.... Don't scold them too much in training or when they misbehave, because it will lull them into a deep sulk. They absolutely love water and are agile and brilliant swimmers! They look elegant, noble and intelligent. They're eager and quick to learn. They are best taught in small intervals becuase they willl get bored with repotitiation.

CHILDREN:

Most Flat Coats enjoy being around children due to their gentle, easy-going and calm and friendly nature, they will be quite submissive and you can trust them if they are trained to be with kids!

CRUFTS WINNER 2011:

This years Crufts 2011 winner was a beautiful, glossy-coated, 9 and a half year old, Flat-Coated Retriever, named Jet (The Kentuckian), he own the Best Gun Dog Category and also went on to win Best In Show! He is owned by Iain Ross and was showed at Crufts, by his breeder, Jim Irvine, both from Scotland. He was crowned on Sunday 13 March! There was a total of 21,422 dogs competing over the four day event and a live audience of 138,000.

LIFESPAN AND HEALTH:

Flat Coats have an average life-span of 8-10 years. They can have a litter size of 4-8 pups. Also occasionally epilepsy is senn in the rbeed. They also hve a higher risk of Cancer than most dogs, make sure you regurly give them health checks and vet checkups. Hip displaya is at a very low rate in the breed though.

WEIGHT:

The males can range from 27 - 36 kg (60 - 79 lb) and the females can range from 25 - 32 kg (55 - 71 lb) always check the weight of your dog to make sure he's not underweight or overweight.

HEIGHT:

The males can range from 59 - 61 cm tall at the withers, (23-24 in) and the females, 56 - 59 cm (22 - 23 in ).

APPEARANCE:

Flat Coats have strong jaws and a long muzzle which helps them to hold game etc. Their eyes have a friendly and intelligent expression and are almond shaped with a beautiful dark brown colour to them! There are lighter than the other retriever breeds. They are very attractive dogs and are very lovable.

COAT & COLOURS:

The Flat Coats are normally black but there is a rarer liver-coloured type dog (a rich brown). Occurring rarely is a solid yellow coat colour but these dogs cannot compete in conformation shows but can in different activities like field, agility and obedience trials. Their coats are glossy and smooth and remain even into older age. They always look youthful and happy though. They have a single coat, there is no undercoat, is quite long and the legs, tail, chest, under body and feet have longer feathering on.

Meet Miya :)

Miya is a total crossbreed, believed to be a Flat Coated Retriever cross Collie. She is now two and a half years old and an absolutely manic, crazy, loud, lovable mutt! She enjoys long walks along the beach and the occasional long run or two everyday! Being connected to two working dog breeds, we have to keep on exercising her!!! Her favourite foods are well basically everything! Miya loves food! She also enjoys mucking about with cats and playing crazily with other dogs! She has such a sweet, gentle nature but she can't stand being without people, she loves company, and company loves her! Miya is black and has white 'paint-dipped' paws and a white star-like shape on her flank, and white on her chin, neck parts and tummy area. Being as cute as she is, she attracted a lot of attention when she was a young puppy and still continues to amaze us by her amount of non-stop energy! She is the fastest runner and does not ever tire! If i would describe Miya in one word, it would probably be 'unique' or 'awesome'!!
