Our Charities and Rescues

There are so many animal, human and nature charities and rescue in the USA, UK and in the world! This post is dedicated to the hundreds, thousands, millions and even billions of rescue teams, volunteers, cleaners and managers who give up their time to help the less fortunate, injured or weak humans or animals.

There are many people who do work anonymously for shelters and we need to thank them for their dedication to the running/work of the rescue or charity. We would like to thank everyone who works to help others. Whether its managing a charity's finances, or even cleaning utensils ready for animal surgery, everyone plays their part and helps in every way possible. Volunteers work long hours and dedicate their lives to animals. Carers for fosterers have to dedicate themselves to the animals they work with, day-in-day-out.

Dog of the Week

This blog section features a new dog of the week every week, dogs that are in the news, dogs that are well-known hero's or even just dogs that i have met or know.

This week, let me introduce you to our first DOG OF THE WEEK, Lucky!

LUCKY

Lucky is a handsome, hilarious and hot, male, German Shepherd Dog cross! He was fostered for and then adopted by my auntie from the Westside German Shepherd Rescue of Los Angeles. He was in quite poor condition and had a couple of injuries and mange. My auntie helped along with the rescue to get him back to tip-top condition and now he is the most handsome male! 

He now lives with his girlfriend, Bug, the female Samoyed and has grown to be one of the biggest dogs i have ever seen! Lucky deserves a spot here because of all he's been through and also how sweet, friendly, funny and good-natured he is. He love toys but not cats!   He is a total ladies man and continues to make us laugh when he plays with Bug or his toys.

Miya and Lucky surely do love each other! They loved seeing each other and going to the beach together! Lucky, Bug and Miya do certainly attract a lot of attention! Lucky is above on the right and Bug is left! Lucky is so docile but he can't be without my auntie, he hates not being with her, they are so attached to each other, they're the perfect match, and for Bug, the perfect doggy-match!

Above is Miya and Lucky, on the beach, first time together! (They are such flirts), anyway, so Lucky is such a softie and a lovely dog and he gets on well with almost everyone! He is one of those big dogs who is very soft and gentle and who gets beaten up by dogs that are smaller than him! He really, truly is a brill dog and he is also a good guard dog, he has an ear-piercing bark!!

Lucky is getting very big now! I hope to see him lots more as he is so fun to be with! 'LuckyBear' is a funny lad and he continues to make us laugh and smile! We love you Lucky! Some of my favourite dog breeds:

Here are some of my favourite dog breeds, i love all dogs and all breeds but some i just love love love!

The Pitbull Terrier, a very strong, loyal and independent dog which i love! Although they may have a bad reputation from the media etc, they are lovely dogs, if raised properly and trained at an early age as most dogs. I love their look and their stunning eyes which shine with beauty and dignity, they're  great! 

The German Shepherd also has a lovely coat! They look beautiful and they are beautiful! They ave such a good nature and i love them because my auntie has a GSD cross-breed! I love them with the usual black and tan but also solid black and solid white are my fav's too!

Huskies! I am in love with Huskies! They are beautiful dogs! I just want to touch and stroke and ruffle through their lovely, thick coats which are coloured so uniquely! They are also strong dogs, they are woking dogs and they have a thick coat because they work in the cold, snow and ice of the North!

Flat Coated Retrievers are brilliant dogs! They are intelligent and popular and because my dog Miya is (well, we think) part Flat Coat it has made our love of them grow, we didn't know the breed until a couple of years ago or so! They have a very nice coat and are earger to please and learn! 

The Border Collie, is a very intelligent doggy, one of the smartest in the world in fact! Miya is part Border Collie! They are very excitable and entertainable! They don't ever seem to stop! But they are cool dogs and very fun to have as pets, however you may want to keep them stimulated and exercised as they thrive off of it! The cute pup to the right is a tricolour border collie!

The Fancy Flat Coated Retriever



The Flat Coated Retriever or 'Flat Coat' is a majestic, beautiful and strong dog breed, which makes it this weeks DOG BREED OF THE WEEK!

HISTORY:


The Flat Coat originated in the mid 19th Century, when shooting was at its most popular - it gained popularity as a gamekeeper's dog. The breed originated in the UK from imported Newfoundland Wavy-Coated Retriever dogs or the now extinct St John's Water Dog, these were then crossed with Setters.It is thought that Canadian seafarers brought Newfoundlands  to British ports which helped to contribute to the ancestry of the Flat Coat. Also that Collie-breeds were added to increase trainability and also along with the Newfoundland, the Setter too. Originally bred as a working hunter retriever to fetch shot birds form the water it works well in and out of water.

FLAT COATS AS PETS:


Flat Coats make great pets! This is due to their great nature, they are intelligent, obedient, easy to train, very attentive, lovable, highly affectionate, multi-talented, enthusisatic, gentle and hard-working. but if you have one you must know that you need to keep them exercised as they are a working breed! They love an active life and need to have lots of catching, carry and fetching objects as they love to play! They thrive off exercise and attention.They are eager to please and they await their master's commands eagerly. You can never be sad with a Flat-Coat around!- they are very cheerful dogs and are loyal and happy optimists! Which makes them such lovable and endearing companions. But if you leave them alone they will become despondent and unhappy.... Don't scold them too much in training or when they misbehave, because it will lull them into a deep sulk. They absolutely love water and are agile and brilliant swimmers! They look elegant, noble and intelligent. They're eager and quick to learn. They are best taught in small intervals becuase they willl get bored with repotitiation.


CHILDREN:


Most Flat Coats enjoy being around children due to their gentle, easy-going and calm and friendly nature, they will be quite submissive and you can trust them if they are trained to be with kids!



CRUFTS WINNER 2011:


This years Crufts 2011 winner was a beautiful, glossy-coated, 9 and a half year old, Flat-Coated Retriever, named Jet (The Kentuckian), he own the Best Gun Dog Category and also went on to win Best In Show! He is owned by Iain Ross and was showed at Crufts, by his breeder, Jim Irvine, both from Scotland. He was crowned on Sunday 13 March! There was a total of 21,422 dogs competing over the four day event and a live audience of 138,000.

LIFESPAN AND HEALTH:


Flat Coats have an average life-span of 8-10 years. They can have a litter size of 4-8 pups. Also occasionally epilepsy is senn in the rbeed. They also hve a higher risk of Cancer than most dogs, make sure you regurly give them health checks and vet checkups. Hip displaya is at a very low rate in the breed though.

WEIGHT:


The males can range from 27 - 36 kg (60 - 79 lb) and the females can range from 25 - 32 kg (55 - 71 lb) always check the weight of your dog to make sure he's not underweight or overweight.

HEIGHT:


The males can range from 59 - 61 cm tall at the withers, (23-24 in) and the females, 56 - 59 cm (22 - 23 in ).

APPEARANCE:


Flat Coats have strong jaws and a long muzzle which helps them to hold game etc. Their eyes have a friendly and intelligent expression and are almond shaped with a beautiful dark brown colour to them! There are lighter than the other retriever breeds. They are very attractive dogs and are very lovable.


COAT & COLOURS:


The Flat Coats are normally black but there is a rarer liver-coloured type dog (a rich brown). Occurring rarely is a solid yellow coat colour but these dogs cannot compete in conformation shows but can in different activities like field, agility and obedience trials. Their coats are glossy and smooth and remain even into older age. They always look youthful and happy though. They have a single coat, there is no undercoat, is quite long and the legs, tail, chest, under body and feet have longer feathering on.

Meet Miya :)

Miya is a total crossbreed, believed to be a Flat Coated Retriever cross Collie. She is now two and a half years old and an absolutely manic, crazy, loud, lovable mutt! She enjoys long walks along the beach and the occasional long run or two everyday! Being connected to two working dog breeds, we have to keep on exercising her!!! Her favourite foods are well basically everything! Miya loves food! She also enjoys mucking about with cats and playing crazily with other dogs! She has such a sweet, gentle nature but she can't stand being without people, she loves company, and company loves her! Miya is black and has white 'paint-dipped' paws and a white star-like shape on her flank, and white on her chin, neck parts and tummy area. Being as cute as she is, she attracted a lot of attention when she was a young puppy and still continues to amaze us by her amount of non-stop energy! She is the fastest runner and does not ever tire! If i would describe Miya in one word, it would probably be 'unique' or 'awesome'!!

Dogs Dogs Dogs We Talk Dog!

Our dogs are our lovely, compassionate and considerate companions whom whether we realize it or not, support us throughout our life that we share with them. I am simply a strong dog lover and owner of a beautiful, but absolutely bonkers mutt. I know that some of the experiences that we share with our four-legged-furry friends are interesting and exciting, and i think that we should always fully enjoy the time that we share with our special animals and also take part in all the opportunities it brings. With dogs, we can walk, train, take to the beach, take to dog shows, compete, join agility classes, have them star in films, photograph.... and also do lots more activities with them!
